Thailand

Thailand of today is an upper-middle-income country that has seen dramatic improvements in the health of its population. It is a country of superb cuisine, a rich cultural heritage, exotic rainforests, affordable shopping, hundreds of temples and religious artefacts dating back centuries and ancient villages stowed away in hidden corners of the land. These make Thailand one of the most exciting and rich travel experiences for an Australian student. According to the World Health Organisation, Thailand has a vibrant primary health care, innovative health system development and progressive health promotion programs. Universal health care (UHC) for Thai citizens was introduced in 2002 but despite this huge achievement, there are persistent primary health challenges. Our Thailand placements enable students to learn about community health in a more advanced healthcare environment where allied health professions are recognised.

Nineteen Degrees has two programs running in Thailand. Our Community Health Placement in the North East of Thailand works in conjunction with Khon Kaen University and Phu Pha Mahn District to provide students insight into the Thai healthcare system and clinical practice experience in a community setting. This is managed through a series of lectures, study visits, hospital department rotations, accompanying the Primary Healthcare team on home visits and school health education. Along with clinical practice the group work collaboratively on a variety of community-based experiences and development projects that place groups in uniquely experiential situations that build capacity, advocate for healthy lifestyles and protect local environments.

Our program in the North is based out of Chiang Rai and works in collaboration with Mae Fah Luang University, the University hospital and surrounding primary care units (PCUs). The clinical placement sees the student group learn and work alongside their Thai counterparts at the university and hospital before spending the final two weeks out in the community with the PCUs providing primary health care and education to an ethnically diverse population living in remote villages.

The program is located in the main city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, home to street markets, stunning mountains, hill tribe villages, and botanical gardens which attracts millions of tourists every year. In country support

Our Nineteen Degrees Thailand in-country host is Eve, our Regional Operations Manager. As a Thai native, she has many years of working with rural communities to promote community-driven sustainable development. This places Australian groups in uniquely experiential situations that alleviate poverty, respect indigenous cultures and protect local environments. We achieve this through long-term partnerships with host communities and a focus on in-depth experiential-education travel listening to both university clients and Asian communities. In this way we help ‘change lives through travel’.
