Stepping foot in India for the first time is a sensation you will never forget, an attack on the senses, leaving you wide eyed and amazed. The culture shock is intense and while India may send your Western ideas of humanity into torrents of confusion, it will also doubtlessly impress you with some of the less confronting aspects of Indian cultural heritage: the glorious Taj Mahal in Agra, dozens of beautiful temples, the majestic snow-capped Himalayas, rich cultural and architectural heritage, Indians' love for cricket and a cuisine that is simply superb.

Project info

We partner with a number of community service providers in the northern state of Uttarakhand at the foothills of the Himalayas, advocating for community participation in development projects to improve access to healthcare, skills development, a reliable income and education. Organisation staff are intensely passionate about the social justice causes they promote providing students opportunity to immerse themselves in India’s rich culture and be swept along for the ride whilst developing skills in project assessment, planning and delivery, teamwork, communication and professionalism.

Opportunities

Working with community organisations and side by side with local education and development professionals as well as community stakeholders, students have the opportunity to expand their learning in this rich cultural environment. Students are placed in teams with an organisation and exposed to case studies, the local environment, resources and tools to inspire them to develop small projects that utilise their combined skills and have favourable outcomes for the beneficiary. Students might develop career action plans for Year 12s at Purkal Youth Development Society or research global fair trade market opportunities for Purkal Stree Shakti or perhaps work with local architects on designing a sensory play room for the kids at Latika Roy Foundation. At the end of the three weeks students have not only achieved great things for the organisation and community but gained cultural competence and valuable life skills to ensure they are graduate ready.

“Lucy and I would be organising career/professional development workshops for the middle and secondary level students as well as engaging with the vocational students in discussion and debate topics to help practise their conversational English skills. .”

In country support

The support team in Northern India have a great deal of experience working with international groups and connect with a strong network of community-based organisations and NGOs to provide interesting and challenging internships for university students. They work above and beyond, always going the extra mile to ensure students are well supported.

Nineteen Degrees staff have worked with our partners for several years, and we value their knowledge, advice, and experience. Their support is wide, employing graduates from community development initiatives and providing long term financial support to local grass roots organisations. We are extremely proud to be partnering with them.
